Armed Forces Day
by Del "Abe" Jones
At the urging of Harry TrumanThe third Saturday in MayThe new Department of DefenseProclaimed it, "Armed Forces Day".
A day to Thank all the ServicesWho defend our air, land, and seaWho serve our Country ProudlyDefending, this Land of the Free.
All those young Men and WomenAnd too, all of those "oldsters"Who march, fly, and set sailAs Airmen, Sailors, Marines and Soldiers.
Some of them serve as "Regulars"And some just do, the weekendBut all step forward, Strong and ProudWhen we need someone to send.
The times have been a'changingAnd missions they are asked toGrow much more complicatedThan what, they used to do.
They must be Warrior and DiplomatWith clenched fist or gentle touchPass the ammunition, feed the hungryBuild roads, hospitals, and such.
"A Tradition of Heroes"Is what some people sayAnd, we all owe them a, "Thank you!"On this, "Armed Forces Day"

"Conservatism is the antithesis of the kind of ideological fanaticism that has brought so much horror and destruction to the world. The common sense and common decency of ordinary men and women, working out their own lives in their own way -- this is the heart of American conservatism today. Conservative wisdom and principles are derived from willingness to learn, not just from what is going on now, but from what has happened before."
"A democracy is two wolves and a small lamb voting on what to have for dinner. Freedom under a constitutional republic is a well armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin
